Privacy and use of this site.

Privacy notice

This is a website of Natalie M. Scala and James P. Howard, II. The chapter and contributor searches run in your browser, and the site has no account system, advertising, or server-side search service. Search words can appear in the page address so that a search can be bookmarked or shared. A shared address therefore includes the search itself. The prepared production deployment uses GitHub Pages for hosting and Cloudflare for domain services. Hosting and domain providers may process request information such as an IP address, browser information, requested address, and time to deliver and protect the site. Their processing is described in the GitHub privacy statement and Cloudflare privacy policy.

Google Analytics is not enabled in this version. No measurement ID is configured, so accepting a historical preference cannot load a Google tag. There are no optional tracking cookies to accept. Enabling analytics later requires a separate configuration and a new affirmative choice for that configuration; it does not reuse a choice made while analytics was disabled.

Email sent through the contact link is handled by your email provider and the receiving mailbox. Information you include will be used to respond to the request and investigate the reported issue. Please avoid sending confidential records. Publisher and editor websites are separate services with their own privacy practices; opening a link takes you to that service. The companion loads its cover and identity images locally rather than asking the original image providers to serve each visit.

Cookies and browser storage

The consent controls use a first-party cookie named defenseor-consent when you make an analytics choice. It records the decision, policy/configuration version, and expiration, not a visitor identifier. It can last up to 365 days, is scoped to this host, uses SameSite=Lax, and is marked Secure on HTTPS. Removing it in your browser removes the remembered choice. With no analytics configured and no previous choice, simply browsing the site does not create a preference cookie. No local-storage database is used. A browser’s Global Privacy Control signal keeps optional analytics off.

Open Cookie Settings. With JavaScript disabled, no analytics tag loads; browser settings can still be used to remove any earlier cookies.

Using the companion

The website supports reading, teaching, and finding the handbook’s contributions. The material is educational and should be assessed in light of the assumptions, dates, and scope of the relevant source. It is not operational direction or a substitute for professional judgment. Links to the publisher identify where the published book or chapter can be obtained; this site does not guarantee access through a subscription or account held elsewhere. Please report errors or access problems through Contact and corrections.
